Walkmate Three Peaks Challenge - 2011

This is really just an idea at the moment.  But, is anyone interested in doing the Three Peaks Challenge in 2011?

The Challenge...

  • Three Peaks
  • 24 hours
We must walk up Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon in 24 hours including travel time between the mountains.  These peaks are the tallest in Scotland, England and Wales respectively.

I did this challenge in 2009 and it was absolutely brilliant.

The Details

There are no firm details for this yet, I'm really just getting an idea of who's interested.  It largely depends on if there's enough interest.  But, to begin with, I expect it would look something like this.

(Ben Nevis)

We'd all meet up in Manchester, and collect the minibus(es).  From there, we'd drive up to Fort William, probably the night before, enjoying a few drink and a good hearty meal.  A long sleep in, then in the afternoon of the following day we'd start to walk up Ben Nevis, returning just as the sun is setting over the Scottish mountains.

(Scafell Pike)

With Ben Nevis out the way, we'd all pile on to the minibuses, and head down the 260 mile trip down country to the Lake District, heading to Wasdale Head, the quickest way up Scafell Pike, arriving there just before sun rise.  With a quick run up Scafell Pike, taking around 2.5 hours up and 2 hours down, we'd be on our way to our final peak, the 200 miles from Wasdale Head to Pen-y-Pass.

(Snowdon)

Snowdon... up and down the Pyg track, the shortest and fastest way to walk up Snowdon, we'd be back at the minibus, with the challenge now behind us, and we'll head back to Manchester, getting there for about 6 or 7pm, ready for a big dinner and well earned pint.

Possible... oh yes!  It's been done.

Costs?

There will be a cost for doing this, the cost of hotels, petrol, hiring minibuses, but this will vary greatly depending on how many people want to do it.  I wouldn't even guess at the cost right now.

Charity?

Potentially this could be done for a charity, or just for fun.

When?

Summer of 2011, probably near the end of June as this gives us maximum daylight hours, and a fighting chance of decent weather.

Training?

Well, we're all here because we love the hills.  I will, and I'm sure others will put on a lot of training trips to these hills.  Snowdon and Scafell Pike are the hills I climb most, and during the summer months tend to climb up them quite a few times.  We'll also put training trips on in the Brecon Beacons, Peak District, and some of the bigger mountains in Scotland before the event.
